COMMUNITY leaders are organising a vigil tonight for murder victim Nicole Cartwright, whose body was found at a Hunters Hill park last week.

Residents of the area will gather at Buffalo Creek Reserve, Hunters Hill, from 6pm to pay their respects to the 32-year-old Lansvale woman who police earlier today revealed as the murder victim.

A council worker found her body in a bush at the reserve, with hands bound, on Wednesday October 3 at about 7.30am.

The vigil will see candles lit, music played, a poem recited, and the names of each woman murdered in Australia this year read aloud.

People are being invited to bring candles and floral tributes, and consider making a donation to a women’s shelter.

Ryde councillor Penny Pedersen is organising the vigil.

While she did not know Miss Cartwright, she said residents had contacted her about a vigil.

“It will be sombre, low key and reflective,” Cr Pedersen said.

“It’s purely to give an opportunity for the community to come together and reflect on what has happened and comfort one another.

“It’s devastated a number of women I’ve seen. It’s a horrible thing to have happened.”

The vigil was being planned before the body was identified today.

Jo Taranto of North Ryde will recite the poem Remember Me by Margaret Mead.

She said this was the second time in recent months a woman had been found murdered in the area.

The other victim was Cecilia Haddad, whose body was found in the Lane Cove River at Woolwich in May.

“I feel deeply affected as a woman. There is the issue of violence against women in the community and we need to talk about it,” she said.

“Without pre-empting the details (of how Miss Cartwright was killed), she was still a woman who fell victim to a violent death.”
