“At the time she was located she was wearing a dark jacket with a hood and a black and white dress with long black pants underneath. She also had a pair of black boots on and a purple collar. The clothing is consistent with the clothing she had at Muesum Railyway Station and the clothing she had in her possession at the time,” Homicide squad commander Detective Superintendent Scott Cook told media today.
“She was covered in some leaves and bark. We’re not sure when she was placed there.
“We don’t have a cause of death at this stage but she did suffer injuries suffice to say they’re consistent with assault, she was bound, with hands in front of her body.”
Police are trying to piece together what happened between September 30, when she was last seen alive, and October 3. They are urging anyone with dashcam footage, or friends who spoke to her, to come forward.
“(Nicole) was well liked, she travelled a lot in Sydney’s train system,” Det Supt Scott Cook said.
“She has a broad range of friends around the whole Sydney area. Her family are devastated, the parents are very, very sad.”
Nicole’s brother Ben Cartwright wrote on Facebook today: “Rest in Peace my little sister! I love you with my all. It is with very sad and heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved daughter, sister and friend Nicole Cartwright has sadly passed away. Details at this stage will not be discussed. Please respect our families wishes by not asking for details and respect our privacy. Thank you for all the love and support we have received from family and friends over the last few days.”
Officers were called to Buffalo Creek Reserve in Hunter’s Hill after a council worker found the body at 7.30am last Wednesday.
“Ms Cartwright lived with her parents at Lansvale and had a wide circle of friends, often spending time in Sydney’s CBD, Eastern Suburbs, and surrounds,” police said in a statement.
“She did not own a vehicle, but frequently travelled on public transport around the Sydney Metropolitan area.”
Sydney woman Maida Choudhary, who runs an events business, said she had met Ms Cartwright when she was organising a birthday party and remembered her “trendy” dress sense.
“That’s how I remember her name,” Ms Choudhary said.
“I saw her (picture) this morning and was like oh my god, I know her.
“I remember speaking to her and she was really lovely — just a normal girl. It’s kind of crazy — I don’t know how someone can do that — It’s beyond me.”
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Ryde Police Area Command have established Strike Force Winkurra to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
