MOTORISTS using a popular rat run to avoid Victoria Rd will be forced to slow down when traffic-calming measures are installed.

The work on Morrison Rd at Putney, and connecting roads Acacia Ave and Parry St, is designed to prevent more dangerous encounters, such as cars hitting children as they cross the road.

Residents Darryl Fung and Rolf Clapham know these stories too well.

They have seen the number of cars using the street increase greatly over the years and, with it, more dangerous driving.

Mr Fung said: “There is always confusion about who has right of way.

“There is a lot of signage, but a lot of confusion.

“Children have no perception of the road rules or speeds. I’ve seen schoolchildren get hit by cars here. Not injured, but hit.”

Mr Clapham’s daughter was hit while crossing Morrison Rd at Charles St two years ago, not far from where the new works will be installed.

A four-wheel-drive turned into the street, and the 14-year-old bounced off its bonnet. While the girl was not hurt, the incident only strengthened Mr Clapham’s resolve for traffic-calming measures.

“We just pushed further and further to make sure something happened,” he said.

The two residents have worked with Ryde Council and Lane Cove state Liberal MP Anthony Roberts for years to lobby Roads and Maritime Services.

Mr Roberts said the roads were never designed for the volume of traffic they currently served.

The works will include concrete dividing strips in Parry St and Acacia Ave, a rubber speed hump in Acacia Ave, three rubber speed cushions in Morrison Rd and one in Parry St, kerb blisters and kerb ramps in Parry St, signage and linemarking.

The works will cost $2 million and begin in the first quarter of next year.
