Carlingford’s Kieren Briggs has had a strong NEAFL season rewarded after re-signing with the GWS Giants for another two years.
The 19-year-old became the second western Sydney talent to be drafted by the Giants when he was selected at pick 34 in the 2018 AFL draft.
Since then the 200cm-tall ruckman has been making his presence felt in the middle for GWS’ NEAFL squad.
Through 18 rounds of the 2019 season, Briggs is averaging 11.2 disposals and 3.3 marks per game while also kicking 14 goals.
Giants list manager Jason McCartney said Briggs had more than earned a contract extension.
“It’s great to add another two years for Kieren who was considered one of the best tall prospects in last year’s draft,” McCartney said.
“He’s continued to grow and develop in the NEAFL this season and is a really exciting ruck prospect for the club.
“Being a local western Sydney boy, we’re looking forward to him being a role model and example for all the young up and coming footballers in the region.”
For Briggs, being able to chase his dream so close to home played a substantial part in his decision to extend his contract.
“Growing up in Sydney was a big factor, being able to stay close to family and friends,” he said.
“The culture around the club’s been really welcoming. All the boys have been great in helping me transition into the AFL environment.
“I grew up supporting the Giants so to be playing for the club is awesome.”
