A SPIKE in illegal dumping has hit the northern district, with workers and residents treating the area like a tip.
These photos show some of the worst examples in recent months: concrete waste at North Ryde, logs and woodchips at Ryde and a stack of household rubbish at Gladesville.
Ryde Council is appealing to the public for help in identifying these perpetrators, and others. Rangers have been successful on other occasions, issuing seven penalty notices last financial year.
Five of these were for dumping waste on a nature strip, one was for concrete dumped on the road and another for dumped building site sediment.
A spokeswoman for the council said in addition to being unsightly and posing danger to the public, illegal dumping cost about $100,000 per year.
She said people should be aware they remain legally responsible for their rubbish, even if they arrange others to dispose of it, until it is properly disposed of at a licensed facility.
Illegal dumping carries on the spot fines of $2000 (individuals) and $4000 (businesses).
If the matter goes to court, the maximum penalties are $250,000 and $1 million.
There are services available for disposing of bulky household waste: book a free household collection through the council; go to the Community Recycling Centre at Artarmon; or arrange for The Bower at Marrickville and Parramatta to collect goods for repairing and reusing.
There are also problem waste stations for televisions, computers and related items which cannot be placed in garbage bins or left out for an organised household rubbish pick-up.
These are at Suez Ryde Resource Recovery Centre at North Ryde (Wicks Rd), Macquarie University, Tzu Chi Australia Eastwood and West Ryde Library.
