INSPIRING and educating students across the state is what Eddie Woo does best. His new role will allow him to share his passion and ‘teach the teachers’ the magic of his approach.

The high school mathematics teacher will now train other educators to engage and inspire in the classroom. The announcement was made at Ryde Secondary College by Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Education Minister Rob Stokes last week.

The award-winning math teacher has his own YouTube channel dubbed Wootube. His 120 videos have been viewed almost 13 million times.

His roving instructor role will allow him to remain in the classroom but also travel the state to teach the teachers.

“We are so lucky to have one of the world’s best teachers right here in the NSW public schools system and now we would like to see Eddie’s magic rubbing off on our educators across the state,” Ms Berejiklian said.

The teacher’s rise to internet stardom began when he filmed and uploaded the classroom lesson to share with a student too ill to attend.

“I was told that one of my Year 10 students had been diagnosed with cancer and would have to take time out of school to undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy,” the Cherrybrook Technology High School head maths teacher said.

“I decided to upload videos of my classes to YouTube so he would be able to follow along and learn at his own pace.”

He propped his phone on a wooden stand and filmed it each day.

They feature him decoding mathematics on the whiteboard for his students. Soon, students, parents and teachers began tuning in to learn from Mr Woo.

He was recently named the 2018 Australia’s Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards and was named one of the top 10 teachers in the world in the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize.

Mr Stokes said the teacher’s infectious excitement for mathematics and how it is applied in the modern world was the type of resource that money cannot buy.
