The NSW Government Department of Planning and Environment has recommended that the development application for the Gladesville Shopping Village site proceed to the Joint Regional Planning Panel despite objections from Hunters Hill Council.

The department completed its assessment of the planning proposal earlier this month after it was rejected by the council due to issues such as poor presentational quality and Traffic Impact Assessment deficiencies.

In its report, the department recommends that the proposal be referred to the Sydney East Joint Regional Planning Panel to determine whether it proceeds to public exhibition.

The report states: “the proposal demonstrates strategic merit while raising some site-specific merit issues.

“The site is situated with a highly urbanised environment with convenient access to public transport and in a location that has been earmarked for urban renewal.”

However, the report also outlined a number of amendments for the proposal that must be met prior to public exhibition.

These include: “make recommendation regarding the future of the local heritage item at 10 Cowell St ... review traffic and car impacts (and) revisit the visual impact of the proposed scheme on surrounding local streets”.

It is expected that the JRPP recommendation will be delivered by the end of November.
