“Following extensive community consultation that began in September 2016 and involved two stages, a concept plan for Kings Park was approved by Council in February 2019,” a council spokesman told the Northern District Times.

“A detailed design has been prepared based on this concept plan and construction has now commenced. Council allocated a budget of $2.2 million for the project to complete the design and construction works.

“Construction is expected to be completed by the middle of 2020, weather permitting,” he said.

What will the Kings Park upgrade include?

  • a neighbourhood playground including a shade sail
  • walking paths
  • a large shelter capable of accommodating 20 people for ocmmunity events
  • a multi-purpose court for basketball, futsal and other activities
  • accessible toilet
  • kick-about areas

Mayor Jerome Laxale took to social media yesterday saying the bowling club has been demolished and that the park’s construction was underway.

“The bowling club is gone. We will be replacing that with an outdoor kabana an active sort of synthetic multi-purpose basketball and soccer courts here,” Mr Laxale said on Facebook.

Cr Laxale said the park will also feature a two-level playground.

The former Denistone East Bowling Club was established in 1958 and the major greens and clubhouse was built four years later.

After more than 50 years, the bowling club went under liquidation and shut down at the end of 2012 before council took control of the site.

The new park is due to open in July.
