NSW Bushfires: Ryde Council cancels Australia Day fireworks
Another Sydney council has confirmed it will not be going ahead with its Australia Day fireworks display.
ANOTHER Sydney council has confirmed they will not be going ahead with its Australia Day fireworks display in respect of victims suffering from the “bushfire tragedy.”
Ryde Council announced they will not be putting on a fireworks display at its Australia Day concert held at North Ryde Common on January 26.
“The tragedy of bushfires across NSW have had their impact on locals here in Ryde. After much deliberation, the City of Ryde has decided not to proceed,” Mayor Jerome Laxale told The Northern District Times.
“We will now double our efforts and use the event as a major fundraiser for the victims of this disastrous bushfire season,” he added.
It comes just days after Hills Shire Council cancelled their planned Australia Day fireworks.
While the fireworks have been cancelled, Ryde Council said the concert activities will still go ahead including a Battle of the Bands competition and live performances.
In support of bushfire victims, the council said much-needed funds will be raised towards the Salvation Army Bushfire Disaster Appeal on the day.
Event goers will be able to make donations to collection buckets and put funds towards Eftpos gift cards which will be given to bushfire affected communities in need of supplies.
