The Macquarie Centre is set for a $195 million makeover to improve the night-time vibe and turn it into Sydney’s “most envied” retail and entertainment precinct.

Plans unveiled this week aim to transform the centre into a “flagship” retail location with more dining options, a new playground and improved connection to the train station and bus interchange.

AMP Capital’s proposal comes after the 2016 approval for a mixed-use redevelopment of the shopping centre.

The Stage 2 development application is seeking consent for the construction of a new retail podium, basement parking and additional roof-deck parking along Talavera Road.

“We’re transforming the Macquarie Centre into Sydney’s most envied retail, leisure and entertainment precinct,” AMP Capital Divisional Development director Ben Matthews said.

“The Herring Road Corner Podium will become the leisure and entertainment precinct of Macquarie Centre and will deliver a vibrant and active pedestrian-focused environment, which includes the creation of Station Plaza, a major civic space for the area.

“We are very excited about improving the connection between the centre and public transport. The podium will also transform the street appeal of the Herring Road corner, creating a vibrant ‘front door’ for the centre.”

Under the plans, there will also be landscaping improvements and 480 additional carparking spaces.

The AMP Capital vision falls in line with Greater Sydney Commission’s call for improved night-life across the Harbour City.

“Cultural vibrancy is reinforced by (strong) night-time economies; this can generally occur in mixed-use centres,” the GSC says in its north district plan.
