THERE were some hair-raising moments for Warringah Ratette Chloe Dalton and her Australian women’s sevens rugby team on the way to winning gold medals at the Rio Olympics this week.

Our photo shows a desperate New Zealander Kayla McAlister stretching more than the rules as she attempts to tackle Dalton in the Olympic final in what was hardly classic defence.

It appears she took the inflammatory comments from Kiwi coach Sean Horan that the Australian team “don’t like the physical side” of the game too literally.

But she chose the wrong target in Dalton who has handled much bigger challenges on her way to winning her gold medal.

“I had a pretty tough time breaking my arm three time in the same spot so I learnt a lot from it and had to learn a lot of resilience,” she said.

FORMER Australian hockey player and coach Richard Charlesworth should have seen this photo before he won the gold medal for the Olympics biggest nark by a big margin.

While the rest of Australia embraced the efforts of Dalton’s Aussie team in what was one of the great stories of the games Charlesworth said. “I think the women’s rugby sevens is a soft event whereas the men’s is a much more competitive event.”

He was also quoted as saying the Olympic hockey tournament presented a bigger challenge over a longer period of time than rugby sevens.

Clearly the 64-year-old has no idea about the fitness, stamina and skills required to play sevens at the top level- and Blindside can testify as to how hard the team worked to get the gold medal watching them train for years at Narrabeen.

And try telling the teams from New Zealand, Great Britain, Fiji and France that it was a “soft” event.

Charleworth’s attempt to downplay the fantastic achievements of Dalton, Ratettes teammate Ellia Green and the rest of the Australian sevens team in winning their gold medal this week in Rio was a disgrace.
