A STANDOUT performance from Mick Martin engineered an eighth straight win in the Barraclough Cup for Newport on Saturday.

The men from Porter Reserve beat Oatley 33-14 at HV Evatt Park, with Martin’s fearless runs laying the platform in the three tries to one victory.

Halfback Hugh Lamrock also had a creative game, scoring a great solo try that had the visitors in control 14-5 at half-time.

Second-half tries to impressive flanker Matt Wilson and fullback Matt Hastie allowed the Breakers to consolidate their position at the top of the ladder.

Hastie also nailed three conversions and four penalties to finish with a personal haul of 23 points.

Newport’s 2nd XV carved out a hard-fought 9-5 victory to stay in second place on the ladder, while fourth grade remain unbeaten after a 24-10 triumph.

All eyes now turn to this weekend’s home blockbuster against UNSW.

With the Breakers and UNSW dominating most grades, a huge crowd is expected to be on hand as the two competition heavyweights go head to head.

Forest meanwhile sit on their own in fought spot after a workmanlike 28-22 win over Lindfield at Melwood Oval.

Forwards Marcus Betts and Nick Shearer were the driving forces in the five-tries-to-three win.

Lindfield led 15-5 just before half-time but a committed second-half performance was enough to let Forest surge home to win.

The Forestville club are away at Hunters Hill this Saturday.
