THE SEA Eagles have demonstrated that they don’t intend taking any prisoners by recruiting a top cop into their ranks for next season.
Recently retired superintendent Charlie Haggett has been appointed Manly’s new football manager after a distinguished 34 year career in the force.
During his career Haggett was the instigator for the highly successful licensing lockout laws in Newcastle which have dramatically reduced assaults and violence in the area.

He was also involved with any number of high profile criminal investigations.
“There is a very strong passion for what you do for the community and when you go away from it is something that you miss,” Haggett said.
The new job marks a return home for Haggett, a Sea Eagles junior with Cromer and Harbord United who went on to be a first grade hooker between 1986-89.
“I had one ambition- to play one first grade game with Manly and I ended up playing a few more,” he said.
After leaving the police last year where he was in charge of the Hunter region he has been working with the Melbourne Storm which reignited the passion to be involved in rugby league again.
“I had a security liaison role and I have written safety security plans for them and I think they are going to be at the forefront as far as security into the future for rugby league and sporting organisations in Australia,” he said.
He also worked at the Asia Cup football competition as a security officer.
“The opportunity presented itself to come to Manly so I was pretty quick to jump at it,” he said.
“I’m very excited about it, l’ve always had a passion to be part of the club and being away from it all has been a lonely time.”
And he will take his wealth of knowledge into his new role at Manly which includes handling team logistics.
“There has been some really positive changes- there is a new gym -and I think the players will be very impressed with the facilities the club is moving forward with,” he said.
