spent seven years in the British Army but she said she had not experienced anything like the fighting spirit of the Northern Beaches Roller Girls.
The player nicknamed Corporal Punishment made her debut for the team as they scored a thrilling two point win over Inner West in the final 30 seconds of their bout last weekend.
“I’ve never been involved with a group of girls who are so dedicated and fight for what they want right to the bitter last minute,” Buckingham said.
“It was the best feeling ever.”
Buckingham, who had been roller skating since she was four, made a big impact as a jammer with the Northern Beaches Girls who have won their first two bouts.
“I can’t see myself doing another sport ever again,’’ she said.
CONTRACT TALKS ON HOLD
SEA Eagles five-eighth Kieran Foran wants to put all his efforts into his foot ball and has put new contract negotiations with the club on hold until the end of the season.
“I’m aware that I have only one more year to go next year,” Foran said.
“But for me at the moment I’m not in the headspace to be talking contracts.
“I just want to concentrate on this year. I want to have a really good year in footy.”
Foran said that at the end of the year he would get a better feel for where his head was at regarding his contract talks.
“At the moment I don’t want to be dealing with it in season,” he said.
“In previous years maybe I have wanted to but this year I feel I want my head fully focused on footy.”
THE PRICE OF SUCCESS
THE Manly Marlins are victims of their own success.
Head coach Phil Blake and his predecessor Tim Lane have been snapped up by European clubs.
Manly president David Begg said the club knew that coaches of their calibre were not going to be at the club forever.
“We are just really happy for Phil — it’s a great opportunity for him,” Begg said.
“And if we played a small role getting his name into people’s consciousness, that is great."
Begg said Blake had made what was a pretty strong club when he arrived considerably stronger.
“His absolute commitment is one of his real strengths,” he said.
“The great thing about Blakey is that he arrives before the start of fourth grade and he and I are still talking about the game at seven o’clock on Saturday night,” Begg said.
COLOSSAL COOPER
