ANIMAL experts say wombats walk with a shuffling, waddling gait — just don’t tell that to Betty.
One of Calmsley Hill City Farm’s favourite marsupials has been in training, literally, with regular small walks around the grounds of the park.
Her carers say the wombat, who is kept on a gentle chest harness lead, is hitting her stride.
Farm general manager Noah Moseley says Betty is more than six years of age, and has a friend, another wombat called Barney, who is actually a little bit shy.
“Barney has special needs,” Mr Moseley said. “While Betty is quite happy to get out and about and go for a wander and amble along and sniff everything.”

Although wombats appear to be slow and docile, they actually are quite alert and can move quickly if necessary, even at speeds of 40km/hour.
The Abbotsbury-based farm is open to the public as well as educational groups and includes koalas, sheepdog shows, an animal nursery, sheep, pigs, lambs, goats, cows, bunnies and chicks.
It is open every day 9am-4.30pm.
