After the deaths of Bing Lee in 1987 and his son in 2007, Ken’s wife Yenda and son Lion now carry on the family business.
“Initially we chose Fairfield as our base because of its proximity to government accommodation housing new Australians at that time,” Mrs Lee said on Bing Lee’s website.
“We serviced the aspirations of many different people and cultures.
“As the migrants, our customers, moved further afield, so did Bing Lee.
“Like all new Australians, we quickly became part of the colourful fabric of Australia.”
The business’s longevity will be recognised at Fairfield’s inaugural Lifetime Business Awards tonight at Fairfield RSL Club.
The awards recognise businesses in the Fairfield city centre that have operated for more than 25 years.
Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone said Bing Lee was one of the area’s best known success stories.
“Bing Lee has gone on to become an Australia retail giant — and they still have a store in Fairfield,” Cr Carbone said.
“To be in business for half a century or more proves you are definitely doing something right.”
