Just a handful of teams remain undefeated in the Shute Shield after a second round of drama, injury, an upset and a blowout or two.
Numerous players received blue cards or left the field with concussions as Gordon recorded the most emphatic victory of the competition to date and Northern Suburbs again thwarted their opposition to remain without a try scored against them after two games.
Gordon, Norths, Randwick and Sydney Uni all have two wins with Southern Districts, who had the bye, also undefeated.
RANDWICK: From chicken shop to Shute Shield
GORDON: Family loyalties split
GORDON 64 WESTERN SYDNEY 0
In the most resounding win of the season to date, Gordon smashed the Two Blues 64-0 with brothers Jordan and Harrison Goddard both scoring.
Gordon captain Jordan went over once with Harrison scoring twice against their father’s old club.
Brandon Quinn also produced two tries for Gordon, who took down the Beasties 35-24 in round one.
“Our standouts were our No.6 Tom Silk, fly half Rod Iona and Harrison, they were really calm and composed,” said coach Darren Coleman.
“Two good wins to start going into the bye was our plan.”
RANDWICK 13 WARRINGAH 8
Randwick knocked off last years runners-up Warringah 13-8 in a rain-affected upset.
It was the second loss on the trot for Warringah who went down 27-36 to Sydney University in round one.
Thomas Piroddi scored for Randwick and Rory Suttor for Warringah.
“We will take that win for sure, I learned a bit about my team,” said coach Ben McCormack.
“We had a fair bit go wrong with injuries and injuries, a red card (Lachlan Miller), we were up against it and the boys showed plenty of resilience and grit.”
RANDWICK: What a difference a week makes in sport
“I don’t think Randwick has beaten Warringah for a number off years, we have been on the end of some pretty good towel ups, so this is good.”
Ryan Powter and Dave Horwitz will both be missing this weekend after suffering concussion while Henry Hutchinson is under an injury cloud with a leg issue.
SOUTHERN DISTRICTS: Code switch for scoring gun
NORTHS 53 PENRITH 3
Norths beat the John Muggleton coached Penrith 53-3 with the Emus returning to the competition after a time out.
Reece Mau’u did much of the damage, going over twice for Norths who have yet to have a try scored against them this season.
George Murrin, Jesse Muir, Nick Palmer, Isaac Cavu,
Max Burey and Harry Burey all scored tries.
“Not leaking any tries for two weeks is a big positive,” said Norths coaching director Zak Beer.
Beer said Charlie Jeavons-Fellows had suffered a concussion and will be out this weekend.
EASTS 36 WEST HARBOUR 10
Easts beat West Harbour by 26 points in another high scoring game.
Easts has five different players score tries in the match while Pirate Rod Davies was given a blue card after a knock.
Coach Pauli Taumoepeau said Henry Paterson was a standout.
“He looked dangerous every time he got the ball and scored the first try of the game,” he said.
Other tryscorers for East were Jordan Jackson-Hope, Sam Shires, Richard Woolf and Charlie Smith.
Elliot Turner scored the Pirates one try of the game.
EASTWOOD: Tane out to make his own way in sport
EASTWOOD 46 HUNTER WILDFIRES 11
Shawn Ingleby had the honour of scoring only Newcastle’s second try of the Shute shield season after Lachlan Miller went over in round one.
Youngster Tane Edmed scored 16 points for Eastwood courtesy of five conversions and two penalty goals while Chris Bell, Devan Stolz, Michael Icely, Matthew Gonzalez, Ed Craig and Enoka Muliufi all scored tries.
“I think we are running at about 50 per cent,” said coach Ben Batger, who has blooded a handful of players in each game this season.
Batger said his team remains injury free after two rounds.
“We have a few bumps and bruises but nothing serious,” he said.
SYDNEY UNI: Early birthday pressie for teenage debutant
SYDNEY UNI 10 MANLY 6
In lowest scoring match of the round Sydney Uni beat Manly 10-6.
Henry Cluines-Ross scored the only try of the game in his 50th first grade appearance while Yool Yool converted two penalties for Manly.
Defending Shute Shield champions Sydney Uni are now one of only four teams in the competition with two wins.
“We have to get better. Our attack still needs work. We are still a bit clunky,’’ Manly coach Matt McGokdrick said.
“Ian Stuart had a really good game for us and Connor Davidson our prop.’’
Harry Bergelin missed most of the match with a facial laceration which required a hospital visit.
