Chatswood is on the cusp of a major retail boom with a list of prominent sites set to be turned into new shopping and commercial hubs.

An $18.3 million proposal to transform an office building 272 Victoria Ave into a new retail complex is the latest proposal set to reshape the town centre in the coming years as part of plans lodged to Willoughby Council.

The development – proposed by 272 Victoria Pty Ltd – includes five levels of retail and commercial space along with outdoor terraces, landscaping works and three levels of basement carparking with 43 spaces.

The development would be located across the road from Chatswood Chase and would involve demolishing the current building, home to businesses including vacuum cleaner store Godfreys.

The proposal adds to a growing list of new retail and shopping centres currently planned in the suburb including the $295 million redevelopment of Chatswood Chase.

Vicinity Centres – the owner of Chatswood Chase – has confirmed work on the project will begin by the end of this year with features including a new and expanded food court, offices and a ‘luxury shopping’ precinct.

There is also a $45 million development application to turn 282-284 Victoria Ave into a new retail and unit complex which is currently subject to a Land and Environment Court appeal.

A new Woolworths is meanwhile nearing completion at Smith St and new retail areas are also proposed within the redevelopment of the Mandarin Centre.

The proposals come as the state government elected Chatswood as one of four hubs that will pilot a program aiming to connect Greater Sydney residents to major services in no more than 30 minutes.

The Future Transport Strategy includes providing commuters with a “one-stop shop” for a range of essential services, such as supermarkets and post offices.

Under the strategy, more walking and cycling pathways would be built to link existing transport options.

Plans for 272 Victoria Ave stated said the proposal would create an “improved commercial offering to Victoria Ave”.

“This development will be a complementary and modern addition (and) enhance the local economy,” the plans stated.

“It will also contribute to the supply of commercial premises and provide the opportunity for the establishment of commercial land uses permitted on the site”.

The proposal is currently under assessment by Willoughby Council.
