A CARPARK redevelopment at Cremorne is set to cost more than $22 million.
North Sydney Council has earmarked the site of the Parraween St Carpark for a major development.
But it doesn’t have the funds to cover the costs and plans to borrow $17.6 million to get the project off the ground. The move was approved in a vote at a recent meeting.
“Council recently commenced a controlled borrowing program utilising a line of credit debt facility which has sufficient funds to undertake this project,” a council spokeswoman said.
“The project is expected to be fully paid off over 20 years.”
The three-level underground carpark is planned to have 161 spaces and will offer two hours free parking. The car park currently accommodates only 57 vehicles.
The development will also include affordable housing units, early childhood centre, public park and cafe.
“While this project is referred to as the Parraween Carpark redevelopment, it is about much more than car parking,” the spokeswoman said.
Construction will take about two years and it is expected to start in the coming months. Council plans to call for tenders for construction next month.
The facility will serve the Mosman and North Sydney communities.
Mosman Council co-owns part of the current site where the early childhood centre is located and is a signatory to the development application which was approved last year.
The plan joins several other carpark projects on North Sydney Council’s books.
It is awaiting the opening of the Alexander St carpark in Crows Nest which underwent a renovation in conjunction with a new Woolworths supermarket.
Projects at Ridge St and Hume St are still in the planning and development phase.
Meanwhile, the Cremorne Orpheum cinema has welcomed the plan for the Parraween Carpark.
Deputy general manager Alex Temesvari said parking in Cremorne can be a “major inconvenience” for cinemagoers.
“Having more parking spaces provided by the council would definitely be great for our guests,” he said.
“This would really make coming to the movies much easier.”
