KIRRIBILLI-based scuba diver Pablo Canestro is on a mission to clean up Sydney Harbour and is calling for volunteers to help him.
He’s been diving the harbour for years and is sick of the amount of rubbish he encounters in the ocean, whether he’s on a work or recreational dive.
Since making a new years resolution to collect what garbage he sees, Mr Canestro has hauled in ten bags of filth per week.
Mr Canestro said the harbour was littered with trash, particularly around the bays and beaches where boat users frequented.
He’s even found an entire wheelie bin on the sea floor.
“Every dive there’s always rubbish to be collected,” he said.
“There’s rubbish everywhere, especially under the water, on the bottom of the ocean.
“Where you have a high concentration of people that’s where the rubbish is concentrated.
“People need to get it into their minds not to toss anything in the water.”
Mr Canestro said he wanted people to work together to keep the ocean clean instead of polluting it.
“Taking rubbish from the ocean will help the environment a lot,” he said.
“There are a lot of tyres, plastics, bottles and all of those things to be taken out.
“If we can do that every time we go for a dive, eventually the bottom of the ocean will be clean.”
Mr Canestro said in addition to volunteer scuba divers, he wanted to get local councils and water authorities involved.
He hopes to draw up a roster of clean-up days for different locations.
Mr Canestro said scuba divers could call Underwater Dive Services 0403 226 644 to volunteer.
Planned clean-up sites include Middle Harbour and Lane Cove.
