THE ruins of a once magnificent Mosman mansion have been boarded up and fenced off to keep out vandals and squatters as its future remains uncertain.
The Mosman Daily reported in February that residents feared it was only a matter of time before a trespasser was seriously injured while causing trouble in the abandoned Morella Rd house.
The estimated value of the property is $8 million.
Known as “Morella”, the trashed property has been derelict since Antony Parer vacated the property to live in northern NSW about 15 years ago.
Mr Parer died last year.
The house is adorned with graffiti, its windows have been smashed out, and floors and fittings pulled out and wrecked.
Residents had called on Mosman Council for years in an effort to have the property cleaned up because it was so dangerous.
A council spokeswoman said on Monday that council was continuing to monitor the situation.
“The estate’s representatives have carried out repairs in accordance with council’s orders,” the spokeswoman said.
“Works include addressing access and safety concerns, repairing perimeter fencing and gates, boarding up areas of the house and cutting back overgrowth.”
The property can be seen from the Chowder Bay to Bradleys Head walk.
Morella is now off limits with cyclone fencing, barbed wire, padlocks and boards inside window frames.
Overgrown plants still flourish through the walls of the house. The home is a bleak contrast to its meticulously maintained neighbours.
Grand designs
Built in 1939 “Morella” was one of Mosman’s most extravagant homes.
Architect Eric Nicholls designed the two-storey sandstone and brick property with picturesque views of Chowder Bay.
The April 1943 issue of Australian Home Beautiful magazine spent six pages showcasing the grandeur of the Parer family’s house.
