BUST out the lederhosen and dust off the dirndl, Oktoberfest is back again.
This year, The Bavarian in Chatswood will be celebrating with six weeks of German-themed festivities, including epic meat platters and limited-edition Oktoberfest biers.
Throughout the festival, which runs from Sept 22 – Oct 27, The Bavarian Chatswood will be dressed to the nines, with the venue donning full Oktoberfest regalia, including drapes, flags and bunting.
Alongside the usual offerings, a special feasting menu has been created, including three and four course dinners as well as hefty meat platters designed to share.
Carnivores can choose from an appetiser platter, which comes laden with cheeses, cured meats, dips, pickles and breads, and a tasting platter piled high with hearty German favourites including pork belly, smoked sausages, chicken wings and roasted pork knuckle, drenched in a meaty bier jus.
According to Thomas Pash, chief operating officer of Rockpool Dining Group, the pork knuckle is the highlight of the menu.
“It’s soft, tender and unbelievably moist, surrounded by what is without a doubt the best crackling in Sydney,” says Pash.
“They’re huge and guests can order half a knuckle if they don’t think they can manage a whole one.”
There’s also 13 schnitzels to choose from, including the classic crumbed veal with lemon, a chicken schnitzel with wild mushroom ragout, and of course, the one kilo Schnitzelmeister.
Naturally biers will be flowing with The Bavarian selling five limited-edition Oktoberfest brews, the very same that will be swilled at the official festival in Munich.
“The Oktoberfest biers are made in Bavaria specifically for Oktoberfest and are only on offer during the festival. They’re typically medium to full-bodied beers with a malty flavour and clean dry finish,” says Pash.
The special biers include Hofbräu München Oktoberfestbier, Löwenbräu Oktoberfestbier, Spaten Oktoberfestbier, Paulaner Oktoberfestbier and Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Märzen, and they will be available at all The Bavarian restaurants on rotation.
Located on the Chatswood Central Precinct, The Bavarian Chatswood can seat up to 240 patrons, with plenty of places to plonk down with a pretzel and stein, including private booths and communal benches, as well as picnic-style seating on the open-air terrace.
Across town, sister venue the Munich Brauhaus in The Rocks will kick off the festival with a street party, which will commence with the ceremonial tapping of the first Oktoberfest beer keg and launch into a lively street parade, which will include an oompah band as well as colourful costumed performers that will sing, dance and yodel.
Back at the Munich Brauhaus, guests can battle it out for the title of Sausage Eating Champion or watch on as schnauzers, pinschers and dachshunds strut their stuff in the Dogs of Oktoberfest contest.
