An employee has been charged with stealing almost half a million dollars from a business in Chatswood in an alleged effort to fund a gambling habit.

The 62-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly siphoning almost $470,000 from the supplement business’s accounts from May 2015 to January this year.

The woman, who was employed to bank the business’s daily earnings, allegedly failed to deposit the cash and instead used the money for the purposes of gambling, police allege.

The woman is due to appear in Hornsby Court later this month.

North Shore Police said an investigation was launched after the owner of company discovered discrepancies in internal accounts.

“It was the sole responsibility (of the employee) to ensure the daily takings were taken to the bank at the end of each shift but it is alleged none of those takings were deposited during that period,” a police spokesman said.

“It came to light after the business owner reviewed his company accounts and realised it wasn’t making the expected profit.

“A lot of businesses these days are depositing earnings electronically but this particular business was using a fair amount of cash as well.”

The woman was arrested on November 8 and charged with five counts of theft and fraud.

She is due to appear in Hornsby Local Court on November 27.
