‘Dwindling’ North Sydney Market to be closed after serving the local community for 33 years

BARGAINS are out and artisinal sourdough is in as much-loved markets in North Sydney kick out second-hand stalls in favour of fresh produce.

AFTER a proud tradition of selling trash and treasure for 33 years, the monthly North Sydney Market is closing - to be replaced by a food-only affair.

General stallholders, who sell clothing, art and other goods will be forced to look elsewhere.

The decision, announced by the North Sydney Community Centre on Saturday, was met with disbelief.

Dwindling attendances have led to the decision to scrap the monthly market.
Dwindling attendances have led to the decision to scrap the monthly market.

A petition has already been drawn up by residents and stallholders in an attempt to reverse the decision.

Regular market-goer Maria Priestley, of McMahons Point said the news had come as a huge shock.

“Not only is this taking away livelihood from people, it’s also something the community will miss,” she said.

“I’ve been living here for 13 years and I rarely miss it. I prefer it to Kirribilli because it has such a lovely atmosphere and it really does provide a service to the community.’’

Ms Priestley said there should been consultation.

The axed general market will be replaced by one extra Northside Produce Market per month.

The community centre runs both the general and produce markets as a major source of its income.

Co-ordinator Mark Rowden said the general market, also known as the Miller St Market, was no longer viable.

“The numbers of stallholders and people coming to the market has been dwindling,’’ he said.

“It’s a shame but we have to respond to community trends and be realistic. A much greater number of people come to the produce market.”

The general market will no longer be held on the second Saturday of the month.

Instead, another Northside Produce Market will take place on the first Saturday of the month.

The existing produce market will retain its usual slot on the third Saturday of the month.

The Northside Produce Market celebrated its 15th birthday in 2014.
