Bystanders were left stunned in horror when a car flipped and landed on its roof in a residential street in Cammeray.
The bright morning sun has been attributed to the crash that unfolded near the corner of Cairo St and Carter St just before 6am this morning (September 30).
Police and paramedics were called to the scene after residents reported the sound of a car swerving and crashing.
The male driver, aged in his 70s, escaped serious harm and was treated at the scene for minor cuts and bruises.
He did not need to be taken to hospital and returned a negative result for mandatory blood alcohol testing at the scene.
A North Shore Police spokesman said the cause of the crash was understood to have resulted from the morning sun impairing the man’s vision.
“He was driving east at an angle – at that hour and at this time of the year as the sun is rising it was shining right into his eyes,” he said.
“As he was approaching the intersection of Cairo St he clipped the medium strip and lost control of the vehicle.”
One bystander told the North Shore Times the crash highlights the dangers of safety in the area with more kids on bikes and cars using the local road network, particularly during lockdown.
Police said no other people were injured in the incident.
