DEFECTING across the lower north shore might have been more than his father could bear, but Mosman first grade captain Scott Rodgie has had a whale of a time, culminating in a record-smashing round 13.

Rodgie, a Cammeray resident in his third year with the Whales, nailed his third century of the season with 126 against Gordon.

The stellar score took Rodgie to 1017 runs for the season. He also smashed a 76-year club record (985) by becoming the first Mosman player to pass 1000 runs in a season on February 10.

Rodgie already passed 7000 career runs in NSW Premier Cricket earlier in the season. He said he was “shocked” when he heard he broke the club record.

“It only came to my attention after the game — it wasn’t until the end of play when the president, Bernie Smith, came to the changerooms and congratulated me in front of everyone, which was nice,” Rodgie said.

“It caught me off-guard; it was something I had not really considered until that moment. But, it’s something I will reflect upon in time.”

Rodgie, who has played cricket since he was “pretty much out of the womb”, was brought up in a Bear-ish cricket family. “Both my Dad and Granddad played for North Sydney,” he said.

“My first cricket memory is probably going to watch my father play and playing in the backyard, trying to bat for a long time and not giving my brother a bat, more or less.”

But when a couple of Mosman mates poached Rodgie from the Bears several years ago, the issue clawed at his family. “Dad didn’t speak to me for a couple of months, pretty much, when I changed teams,” he said.

“So, it was a bit of a family drama, but it was something I needed to do. My Grandfather, he was a bit more understanding and he’s been a big supporter.

“Dad, he’s softened somewhat now but yeah, he’s still pretty much a firm North Sydney man but I think he’s glad to see I’m doing well.”
