WHEN it comes to classic design, Victoria McEvoy has worked with the best in the business.
Before launching her own label she worked at the Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch fashion houses in New York.
And their approach to design have inspired her creations at Irving & Powell.
“I definitely think that my time at both places taught me about the importance of branding,” McEvoy said.
“Creating something people want to be part of.”
The Mosman entrepreneur moved to New York with her then boyfriend and now husband Sam McEvoy.
She was working in retail in Australia at the time and decided she wanted to go to the centre of the fashion world.
They went for two years and ended up staying for 10 — moving back home in 2014.
In New York McEvoy became the head of women’s buying for the Ralph Lauren website and also worked in the online side of the business for Tory Burch for three years.
“It was a really amazing opportunity to get to work with the top people in the business and sit in on meetings with Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch,” she said.
“I was working on Madison Avenue in New York, I was 24 and I thought I’d made it.”
When she arrived home she wasn’t sure what to do with her career and decided to take a chance.
She was drawn to classic and androgynous styles — and found in New York there were so many more options available to create that look.
“I thought there’s got to be an opportunity for women like me who want that classic style,” she said.
After doing a lot of research she launched Irving & Powell as an online business specialising in casual cotton shirts for women in men.

It started with just two basic fits in five core colours and is now offering a range of new fabrics, patterns and fits for its loyal customer base.
“I want people to be able to come on and find the fit they love,” she said.
