NORTH Sydney is home to the state’s best burger, according to the state’s peak hotel body.

The Union Hotel took home the ‘Best Burger City’ category title at the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) NSW Awards for Excellence 2017, and group executive chef Ronny Ghantous said he could not have been prouder.

The hotel was awarded for the quality and make-up of its “famous” beef burger, he added, which sports a “special” in-house burger sauce.

The AHA NSW Awards for Excellence annually recognise the effort of the state’s venues, and showcases the best and brightest in the NSW hotel industry, according to AHA NSW CEO John Whelan.

Mr Ghantous said while it was not the first award the hotel has received, it was an honour for the team to claim the 2017 title.

“We take a lot of pride in our burgers and I knew we had a good chance,” he said.

“We really try to keep up with the trends, and continuously aim to get the perfect blend of lean beef and wagyu meat in our patties.

“The beef burger is really popular at the hotel — it’s tangy, has olives, parsley, pickles and a homemade mayonnaise.

“We’re very proud to receive an award of such standard.”

The Union Hotel was one of 600 nominations received by the AHA this year, entered in across 50 categories, Mr Whelan said.

The Oaks Hotel — an iconic hotel based in the heart of Neutral Bay, which has been around since 1885 — was awarded the ‘Best Steak Venue’ category title at the AHA NSW Awards for Excellence 2017.

“The annual awards night was about recognising the efforts of the state’s venues, (as well as of what) their 75,000 staff members put in each and every day,” Mr Whelan said.

“The Awards for Excellence recognises the best and brightest in the NSW hotel industry — it’s also a chance for hardworking publicans and their teams to celebrate all they’ve achieved over the last year.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners.”
