Police urge people to stay safe for New Year’s Eve

Police are preparing for thousands of people to flood into Sydney’s lower north shore to watch the fireworks and they’ve issued a strong warning to revellers.

How Australia celebrated NYE

Police are encouraging people to stay safe while enjoying the fireworks this New Year’s Eve.

The lower north shore has some of the best viewing spots in Sydney but this year there is less room for everyone.

Sydney Metro construction at Blues Point means that numbers have been slashed at the park.

The reserve is also ticketed for the first time and is already sold out.

“The North Sydney sector has considerable reduction in numbers due to various works at different locations,” North Shore Police Area Commander Superintendent Allan Sicard said.

“Our message is it’s a good year to view make other plans rather than coming to into the city”.

Police expect venues on the lower north shore to be at capacity a lot earlier this year.

Planning for the event began last year and the operation includes vehicle mitigation strategies in key locations. When asked about terrorism concerns Supt Sicard said that “all risks are considered”.

“Appropriate resources are in place and our focus is on having a safe event,” he said.

“We’ve got considerable resources. You can imagine the resources the NSW Police Force has and they will be in place.”

Police have been working with councils including North Sydney and Mosman.

There will be road closures and special event clearways across the foreshore area. Alcohol free zones will also be in place.

Luna Park is hosting a New Year’s Eve party and is welcoming partygoers to attend. It promises one of Sydney’s best vantage points just metres from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

“Here at Luna Park Sydney, we have for years offered a safe and secure location to celebrate New Year’s Eve and enjoy Sydney’s festivities,” said Luna Park Sydney Director Warwick Doughty.

“We have been safely operating ticketed New Year’s events for 14 years, and are committed to the safety and security of all guests whilst they enjoy some of the best views Sydney has to offer.

“We of course want all Australians to be safe over the festive period. We encourage those lucky enough to be in Sydney and the North Shore region over this special period, to enjoy the views of our harbour on our front doorstep in safety.”
