Residents are rallying behind a much-loved Mosman family who have been left devastated after a fire tore through their home.
Nursultan Pervaz, her husband Tolga and their eight year old daughter are facing an uncertain future following a blaze that destroyed their Musgrave St apartment and lifelong possessions on October 28.
Nursultan had just finished work while Toga was out taking their daughter for a haircut when they got the devastating news.
“I just finished my shift and my neighbour rang to say ‘you need to come home, your house is on fire’,” Nursultan said.
“By the time I got there it was too late – the firefighters, police were there and had blocked off the road.
“About three hours later they said we could go inside to see what was left but there was nothing to collect.
“What didn’t burn was really badly damaged with smoke and water or the foam the firefighters were using.
“We lost everything – beds, furniture, sentimental items that we can’t replace.
“We lost our wedding video and photos that weren’t digitised. My daughter’s diaries, my engagement dress that my daughter wanted to wear when she grows up. I was keeping it for her.”
The fire is believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault in the main bedroom.
The family, who are originally from Turkey, had lived in the home for seven years.
Nursultan said they have been provided short term housing but are staring down an eviction deadline looming next week.
“The strata insurance organised a service apartment for us but it’s booked for three weeks and last week they told us we need to move out and find a place for ourselves,” she said
“We want to stay in Mosman because of our daughter’s school – we’re looking at places and we have until next Friday to find somewhere.
“We know we can start a new life and we’re trying to stay positive – but still it’s hard to keep upbeat at times.
“At times your brain stops working because there’s so much to think about.”
A crowd-funding campaign was started on the GoFundMe this week by family friend Amanda Scammell to help the family back on their feet.
More than $2000 has been donated with a goal of $15,000 to purchase items such as furniture and clothing.
Despite the huge challenges ahead, Nursultan said the family was not giving up hope.
“We had so many memories in that house – we moved in when my daughter was little, she grew up there,” she said.
“We’re trying to find somewhere that’s a home, not just a place to move into. You have to try and stay positive.”
