NSW Government pays $3.2m to Luna Park Sydney for Milsons Point park plans in victory for Harry Seidler Park campaigners

THE State Government has bought a 500sq m plot of clifftop waterfront land with a plan to make it a public park.

THE State Government has paid $3.2 million to reacquire prime waterfront land from Luna Park Sydney, ensuring the block — bordering Harry’s Park — remains in public hands.

The 500 sq m clifftop site on Glen St, Milsons Point will become a park. The land has uninterrupted harbour views.

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet made the announcement last week.

Penelope Seidler paid Multiplex $5 million to fight off high-rise development on the clifftop a decade ago, after her renowned architect husband Harry Seidler died.

She founded Harry’s Park — located next to the Harry Seidler & Associates offices — in 2011. Ms Seidler was promised the remaining area would become parkland, but nothing happened.

“I had a little premonition that something was going to happen a couple of days ago and I’m thrilled — this is wonderful news,” she said.

“I’m very pleased, really pleased because at this time I have become rather depressed about the State Government selling off a lot of public land for private purposes and this is the first good news I’ve heard.

“It’s a wonderful outcome for the people of Sydney. I congratulate the government on not caving in to commercial pressure.”

Ms Seidler wants the site to become an extension of Harry’s Park — the way it was originally designed.

Milsons Point resident and community spokesman Ian Mutton congratulated the government’s action to transform the clifftop area, which he said effectively extended Harry’s Park.

“It becomes part of the assets that are Wendy’s Garden, Luna Park and Lavender Bay, so it increases the harbour front land available to the community,” he said.

Mr Mutton said if the largely disused railway line between Lavender Bay and Waverton station became a high line, all parkland in the area would be connected and become a significant tourist attraction.

A Property NSW spokesman said no decision had been made on a name for the clifftop site. A development application is expected to be lodged in coming months.

Luna Park has also reconfirmed its commitment to complete landscaping on an adjacent lot after planning consents have been granted.

A proposed restructure of the existing lease arrangements of Luna Park and adjacent sites will not proceed.
