Trent Zimmerman MP is returning to Canberra after winning the North Sydney seat.
As early voting got underway it was clear Mr Zimmerman was ahead in the count. With more than half the votes counted by 9pm he declared victory as Labor’s Brett Stone conceded.
“I want to thank the people of North Sydney for the opportunity to continue to serve in the Australian parliament as their representative. I won’t let you down,” Mr Zimmerman said.
“We ran a campaign based on improving local services and I’m thrilled that it looks like we are going to be able to support North Sydney Council save North Sydney Pool.”
One of the key local Liberal election promises was $10 million of funding towards the redevelopment of the ageing harbourside landmark.
Mr Zimmerman thanked the candidates who stood against him saying it was a very civil and respectful campaign. He believes North Sydney showed the way for the rest of the country in this regard.
As the final votes come through Mr Zimmerman is on about 59 per cent of the two-party preferred vote — and his margin in the historically conservative seat could shrink.
“I congratulate Trent on the victory,” Mr Stone said.
“The people of North Sydney have sent a message to the Liberal party with these results.
“They’ve stood up for real action on climate change, proper funding for our schools and equal opportunity for all.”
Mr Zimmerman is currently on a margin of about 9 per cent. This compares to the last election where he has a margin of 13.6 per cent.
