They are the five star ratings that every restaurant wants to achieve.
The Scores on Doors initiative is rolling out across the North Sydney LGA and will advise diners how clean a restaurant is.
“Scores on Doors gives customers an idea of what’s going on in the kitchen at their favourite restaurant, cafe or takeaway,” said mayor Jilly Gibson.
“If a restaurant is displaying the purple and green poster, it has met minimum hygiene and food safety standards during the last food inspection.
“If it’s not displaying one, they can ask why.”
North Sydney is the 55th council in NSW to join the program, of which Mosman is already a part.
Three ratings can be handed out: five stars for excellent, four stars for very good or three stars for good.
Eateries that do not meet the required criteria do not receive a rating certificate.
Dennis Xenos from Xenos Greek restaurant in Crows Nest believes Scores on Doors is a positive idea.
“I think it’s a good thing if all businesses are proud to show how safe they are,” he said.
Council will issue the businesses with their ratings after annual hygiene and food safety inspections.
Businesses not due their annual inspection for several months can request “awaiting inspection” certificates from council.
Food temperature control, food handler hygiene and pest control are all taken into account. The initiative aims to improve food safety standards and reduce foodborne illnesses.
The council was due to start implementing the initiative at the start of this month.
