Lady Justice: A gripping new podcast

A young woman from one of Sydney’s most ritzy suburbs kneed a cop in the testicles while she was being arrested, eliciting a harsh dressing down from a magistrate.

Lily Ransfield, 20, was charged with assaulting a police officer at the Vibe Hotel on Sussex St about 10pm on April 19.

Ransfield was stopped by the police and arrested in relation to a separate allegation in which an intimidation charge against her was ultimately withdrawn.

When the Mosman woman was informed she was under arrest, she started to become “aggressive and agitated,” agreed police facts state.

She was then placed in handcuffs before she kicked out her feet and struck the constable in the groin area.

“The accused did not have permission to assault the constable,” police state.

At Downing Centre Local Court on July 12, Ransfield pleaded guilty and received a stern lecture from Magistrate Derek Price.

“It’s important the courts send a clear and consistent message that when you interact with police it may not be pleasant, you may be aggravated, but you can’t knee police in the nuts,” Mr Price told her.

“I don’t know why we have to keep saying this. There will be actual consequences regardless of how old you are and your gender.”

The court heard Ransfield had previous issues concerning drugs, alcohol and mental health.

The April charges triggered a breach of a previous conditional release order imposed after Ransfield pleaded guilty to assaulting one of the state’s most senior cops, Sydney City Police Area Command’s Gary Coffey, and hindering his offsider.

In that incident, about 1.30am on February 20, police were called to the Adina Apartments on Kent St where they arrested a male for unrelated reasons.

Police facts state Ransfield attempted to run towards the male when police stopped her and pushed her towards the bed.

Officers say Ransfield then flailed her legs at a constable, constituting the hinder charge.

Facts tendered to the court state Ransfield then aimed a kick at Mr Coffey, while continually screaming at the police to arrest her.

Ransfield was then arrested and taken into Surry Hills Police Station where she said, “I only did it because I wanted to get arrested”.

Mr Price revoked the conditional release order imposed for the first police assault.

For both incidents, he instead imposed a 15 month community corrections order with supervision by St Leonards Community Corrections. Ransfield will also be required to comply with any mental health treatment or drug and alcohol treatment requested by Community Corrections.
