Coronavirus: Middle Harbour Public School closed after COVID-19 case

More than 600 primary students on Sydney’s north shore have been told not to turn up to school today after a teacher tested positive for coronavirus. Health authorities are now attempting to find out who has been in contact with the teacher.

A school on Sydney’s lower north shore has temporarily closed its doors after a teacher tested positive for coronavirus.

Students and teachers at Middle Harbour Public have been told not to turn up to the primary school on Wednesday and Thursday after the case was confirmed by the Department of Education on Tuesday evening.

In a message to parents, the school it was working with NSW Health to carry out contact tracing and thoroughly clean the 628-student campus.

“Staff and students who are identified as a close contact of the staff member who returned a positive test will be contacted and advised they should self-isolate for the required period of time,” the school said.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students is of paramount importance to us at all times. As such we will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to.”

The Department of Education said it would supply parents with resources to carry out home learning during the closure.

The current term was due to conclude tomorrow with students not due to return to lessons until April 28.

The case comes as latest figures show 39 people have contracted COVID-19 in the Mosman postcode as of Tuesday – the second highest in NSW behind Bondi.

The most number of cases in Mosman were notified by NSW Health on March 20 with five people diagnosed. Nine of the confirmed cases were notified since April 1.

The Department of Education said parents could access the Learning from Home website for materials and resources for their children.

The Mosman Daily has contacted the department for further comment.
