A BLOOD-SOAKED man with gaping wounds ran amok through a quiet lower north shore street, a witness said.

Emergency services were called to Wollstonecraft last night after he was seen racing out of an apartment block covered in blood.

Passer-by Heather Rollo was first on the scene and initially thought the man was being chased and stopped to help.

“He came out of the garage like a man possessed,” she said.

“He came for me and I hid behind a tree. He threw himself face down on the road into the foetal position.”

She said he was like a vulture and was screaming. He had several wounds and she could see a big flap on his calf muscle, an abdominal wound and a big wound on his back.

She rang triple-0 and the man got up and started running again.

A crowd of people started to gather and he started to lunge at them, she said. Three men tried to contain him and she described their actions as heroic.

“You could see bits of his stomach coming out,” she said.

“It was horrendous.

“He had blood from his hair to his toenails. I’ve never seen so much blood in my life.”

When ambulance and police arrived she believes it took them about twenty minutes to subdue the man and get him onto a stretcher.

The 39-year-old was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Police established a crime scene and it was examined by forensic officers.

“Initial investigation suggests the man may have fallen out of the window and the cause of the man’s injuries are not being treated a suspicious,” a police spokesman said.

Police said the man’s injuries were serious and are investigating.
