A man has died after his motorcycle collided with livestock on a rural road on the Mid-North Coast.
Emergency services were called to Greenhills Rd, Upper Taylors Arm – about 30km southwest of Macksville – at 2.40pm on September 18 after reports the rider had crashed into a herd of cows on the side of the road.
Witnesses rendered first aid to the 64-year-old motorcyclist unit before paramedics arrived, however the man died while being taken to Macksville Hospital.
Sadly, livestock-related road incidents are all to common in many part of Australia.
Nebo police officer Andrew Perrett noticed a trend — finding 23 traffic crashes relating to animals in Mackay and surrounds between 2020 and 2021, 20 of which were directly related to cows.
Earlier this year, Constable Perrett implemented a reflective ear initiative which has significantly reduced the problem in his region.
The local cop has continued to rally the farmers of his community to get behind the idea, encouraging them to add the reflective film to their cow’s existing ear tags to increase the visibility of livestock on the road.
Constable Perrett was nominated among other dedicated Aussies in this year’s QBANK Everyday Heroes Awards.
Officers from Mid North Coast Police District established a crime scene at the Greenhills Rd site and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
