After wading through hundreds of nominations and tallying votes in The Mid-North Coast News online poll, the region’s best cafe came down to a race between three – and they couldn’t be split.

Congratulations to our joint winners Steam and Cedar, Gladstone, Miss Nellie’s Cafe of Kendall and Sea Salt Cafe and Restaurant, Port Macquarie.

The three cafes were drilled down to a voting shortlist from close to 300 public nominations across the Mid-North Coast.

It’s a testament to the region’s growing popularity as a destination for good coffees in a social, coastal setting that each cafe has been awarded the same number of votes.

Speaking to The Mid-North Coast after hearing of her success, Ms Nellie’s cafe owner Janelle Nosworthy said it was “awesome to be recognised”.

“And so unexpected!” the Kendall businesswoman said.

“Over the past eight-and-a-half years we have established a very loyal customer base which is evident from this nomination.

“A lot of our customers have become more like extended family. We always endeavour to provide a warm welcome and homely atmosphere.”

Ms Nellie’s is known for its variety of traditional treats and sweats such as cakes, desserts and scones.

“We bake all our cakes, desserts and scones to provide a true “taste of home” evoking memories of Grandma’s home-baked goodies and of course superb Holy Goat coffee.”

About one hour-and-a-half north of Kendall on the Pacific Highway is the idyllic riverside setting of Gladstone, which houses our second winner – the Steam and Cedar Cafe.

Perched on the banks of the Macleay River, Steam and Cedar has been running for three years.

“This is fantastic, it’s so nice to hear,” owner Daniel MacDonald said after receiving the news.

“We hear some lovely feedback everyday from our customers so it’s great to hear they’ve voted en masse.”

“It’s great to hear that our loyal customers think so highly of us.

“We do Artisan coffee and we like to think our coffees are one of the better ones around.

“We also do toasted sandwiches, and we keep a couple of bottles of love in store and we drizzle it liberally over everything.

“We love our customers, and we are very fortunate to have such a beautiful community to operate in. “

The team source their products locally, including roasted coffee from Grassy Head and the Mid-North Coast’s locally manufactured Norco milk, and they even provide some alternative fusion coffee options.

“We do some interesting fusions in our coffees have a focaccia latte, which are rosemary infused coffees with olive oil milk and a little dash of salt on top,” Mr MacDonald said.

“It’s like having an espresso and a freshly baked focaccia together.”

Rounding out the top three in our list of winners is the Port Macquarie Sea Salt Cafe and Restaurant.

Sea Salt Cafe and Restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days right on the Port Macquarie Marina.
