Teen boy, 14, faces court accused of threatening teachers with knife at Wingham High School on Mid-North Coast

A teen boy who allegedly threatened teachers with a large knife as horrified students watched on outside a Mid-North Coast high school has appeared in court. Here’s what happened.

A Taree teenager accused of threatening teachers with a large knife as horrified students watched on has been granted bail.

The 14-year-old boy who cannot legally be named has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of being armed with intent to cause an indictable offence.

He has also been charged with using a knife in a public place to cause a person to fear for their safety.

Charges stem from an alleged incident at Wingham High School on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 25, as hundreds of students went to various venues on sports day.

The boy allegedly threatened a man and woman escorting students to sport with a large knife while he demanded a smaller blade be returned to him.

Officers went to Rowley St about 2pm after the school was made aware of a potential threat, according to NSW Police.

“A man and woman were allegedly threatened by a young person with a knife”, police state.

They arrested the boy “a short time later on Keech St”, a spokesman said.

The presence of multiple police vehicles swarming the small town near Taree caused widespread alarm.

Neighbours reported hearing school lockdown sirens and being on edge as they waited to hear more.

“I had a feeling it was something like what happened,” Jorja Bailey said.

“With the way the school is, it was only a matter of time before someone got hurt.”

Limited details have been released of the offending and children accused of or found guilty of crimes cannot legally be publicly identified.

The boy faced Taree Local Court on June 26. He has been granted bail to reappear at the same court on July 4.

He not entered pleas to the charges.
