Taimana Kreitmeier-Cable: Aspiring Forster rapper appeals assault sentence at Taree district court

There has been a major twist in the court case of a young aspiring NSW rapper who brutally bashed, bit and choked his 80yo grandfather while high on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol.

On March 27, 2024 in Forster local court, Taimana Kreitmeier-Cable was jailed for assaulting his grandfather.

There has been a shock twist in the case of an aspiring young NSW rapper who brutally bashed, bit and choked his 80-year-old grandfather, leaving him unconscious with significant injuries.

Taimana Kreitmeier-Cable was high on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident in Forster in the early hours of January 28 this year.

He’s been behind bars ever since the savage attack, but this week was released on bail as his appeal in the Taree District Court plays out.

Kreitmeier-Cable was 20 at the time and working at a local bottle shop while pursuing his musical aspirations - appearing on social media rapping at home and performing at public venues in Newcastle.

He had also released a track ‘On Hold For A bit’ via his TikTok profile @kreitmeiercable.

He was arrested shortly after the attack on his grandfather, who he was living with at the time, and remanded in custody.

He later pleaded guilty to three charges stemming from the attack: assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contravening a prohibition/restriction in an apprehended violence order and intentionally choking a person with recklessness.

In Forster Local Court on March 27 he was sentenced to an aggregate term of imprisonment of three years and six months with a non-parole period of two years and four months.

The sentence meant he would not be eligible for parole until May 27 next year, but Kreitmeier-Cable lodged a severity appeal with the Taree District Court.

‘Got my child back’

Kreitmeier-Cable’s defence lawyer Todd Scott launched the appeal this week before Judge Clive Jeffreys.

He called on Kreitmeier-Cable’s mother to give evidence about the impact the last few months in custody have had on her son.

She said her son had grappled with drug addiction for the last eight years but now she feels like “I’ve got my child back”.

“Even dad (her father was the victim of the assault) said it wasn’t even him.”

It was heard in court that she talks to her son, who is now 21, up to 10 times a day about options for rehabilitation moving forward.

“Him being in prison has really helped.

“There’s no more zero to hundred anymore,” she told the court in relation to his rapidly escalating anger while on drugs.

“I believe he won’t reoffend, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”

She said she didn’t always notice when he was on drugs but it was the “come downs” that were the worst for her to deal with.

The court heard he was a regular user of MDMA, speed and marijuana but in the months leading up the attack started drinking more alcohol.

It was noted that he was employed at a local bottle shop at the time.

Before delivering his decision Judge Jeffreys asked to hear from Kreitmeier-Cable himself who told the court he was “disgusted with his attitude” at the time and was “on a lot of drugs” but is now committed to rehabilitation.

“I know for a fact I cannot touch drugs or alcohol again and I wouldn’t want to put my family through that hurt again.”

Bitten three times on the arm

Before delivering his verdict on the appeal, Judge Jeffreys outlined the shocking nature of the attack.

Kreitmeier-Cable was living with his grandparents on the ground floor of their Forster home at the time and after the 80-year-old picked up his grandson from work he went to bed around 10pm.

Later that night, after a dispute over loud noise, Kreitmeier-Cable lashed out telling his grandfather: “You just lost me a girlfriend you f***ing little c**t.”

The elderly man walked away but was punched and knocked to the ground where the assault continued.

At one point Kreitmeier-Cable bit his grandfather three times on the arm, piercing his skin, then grabbed him around the throat causing him to struggle to breath and lose consciousness, Taree District Court heard on Tuesday.

Despite the serious nature of the attack Judge Jeffreys determined that: “it seems to me the sentence - bearing in mind the circumstances and age of the offender - is, on the face of it, excessive”.

He adjourned the matter and released Kreitmeier-Cable on strict bail on the condition he lives with his uncle in Kew, attends alcoholics and narcotics anonymous and submits to random drug and alcohol testing.

“I will adjourn the matter for six weeks to see how he goes in the meantime,” Judge Jeffreys said.

The matter will return to Port Macquarie Local Court on August 9.
