A 75-year old man was formally refused bail when he appeared on a murder charge at Kempsey Local Court after a man was stabbed to death at South West Rocks on Thursday night.

John Steele is charged with the alleged murder of David Steele, and appeared in Kempsey Local Court via audio visual link before Magistrate Nash on Friday.

The matter lasted barely a minute, and no application for bail was made by a representative of Legal Aid from Port Macquarie.

Bail was formally refused and Mr Nash ordered a brief to be prepared for the court on June 22.

Police say about 8.15pm on Thursday, emergency services were called to a home at South West Rocks, 40km north of Kempsey, following reports of a stabbing.

The older Steele, who was known to the victim, was arrested at the Gilbert Cory St property and taken to Kempsey Police Station.

The 39-year-old, who lives at the home, was found suffering a stab wound by local paramedics and police.

He could not be revived and died at the scene.

Locals in Gilbert Cory St were reeling from the news that the home of their reserved neighbour is now a brutal crime scene.

Confused residents said they “didn’t dream this would happen in our quiet little street”, and were stunned as police consoled loved ones of the murdered man.

Neighbours said Mr Steele typically kept to himself and acted as a “normal neighbour, an unassuming type of person”.

Most of the stunned community said they didn't hear anything at the time of the incident and woke with shock to news of the death.

One neighbour – who planned to hold her wedding in the area tomorrow – said the death had rattled the whole community.

“This place is like a paradise, this is so shocking for all of us,” she said.

A crime scene was established, which has been forensically examined.

Detectives started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death under Strike Force Eungai Creek.
