A Mid-North Coast teenager doing a wheelie on an uninsured motorbike for onlookers, looked cops in the eye, then turned and crashed into them.

A Taree teen doing a wheelie on an unregistered motorbike for onlookers turned and drove into a police officer patrolling nearby on a pushbike, it was heard in court.

Shaun Weldon, 18, appeared in Taree Local court on Wednesday, May 3, and pleaded guilty to several offences related to an incident in January this year when he was just 17.

Police officers were patrolling in the Bushland and Wyanna Dr areas and the associated footpaths on pushbikes on the evening of January 6.

According to police facts, they saw Weldon performing a wheelie, while not wearing a helmet, for about 50 metres in an easterly direction along Bushland Dr for approximately four onlookers.

Weldon passed police on the walkway and looked at them and then did a U-turn - riding into the pedestrian walkway where the police were, crashing into the leg of one of the officers, according to documents tendered to court.

He became aggressive and argumentative, acknowledging he had performed the wheelie at the request of onlookers, police facts stated.

“The accused was aware of police in the walkway and had a member of the public walked out from the walkway the accused would have collided with them,” police facts state.

Numerous young children were riding bicycles in the area, the facts stated.

Weldon pleaded guilty to driving recklessly/furiously, speed in a manner dangerous; using an unregistered motor vehicle; using an uninsured vehicle; using a motor vehicle on a road related area with motor vehicle tax not paid; and being a motorbike rider not wearing a helmet.

The matter was adjourned to May 24 with Magistrate Allison Hawkins ordering a report to assess his suitability for community service.
