A little chihuahua who fled the scene of an horrific double fatal smash involving two cars and a truck on the state’s Mid-North Coast has been found.

The desperate search was sparked in the wake of the smash on the Pacific Highway on Monday.

The accident took place about 9.50am south of Nabiac, and left two people dead and another four rushed to hospital.

As police tried to piece together how it occurred, the search for Amarni the black chihuahua captured the attention of many local residents who were keen to help locate her.

On Wednesday night Sue Taylor, an experienced trapper who describes her passion for reuniting lost dogs with their owners humbly as a “hobby”, secured the lost dog safely.

She used a humane trap with food leading up to it, and placed clothing belonging to one of the women who passed away in the accident, inside to lure her in.

Amarni has been resting overnight and Ms Taylor said family members of those killed in the accident would travel to the area to pick her up later today.

When officers arrived at the scene of the accident on Monday, about 30km south of Taree, they found a Nissan SUV and a Toyota LandCruiser, which was pulling a caravan, had collided before the SUV hit a prime mover.

Two women who were in the Nissan SUV died at the scene, but Amarni – the black and tan chihuahua that was travelling in the car – was uninjured and fled the crash scene.

The driver and three passengers from the Toyota LandCruiser – a man aged 42, a woman aged 43 and two children aged eight and nine – were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the prime mover was uninjured and was taken to Manning Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

Following the accident there were multiple reports of people seeing Amarni and attempting to grab her, but Ms Taylor repeatedly warned against this, saying it would only make her more frightened.

Ms Taylor said Amarni was very frightened and had a slight limp but was otherwise in relatively good health.

As investigations into the crash continue, police are urging anyone with dashcam vision or information about the incident to contact Manning-Great Lakes Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
