The long-anticipated revamp of an old motel in Crescent Head into what creators describe as a 70s inspired boutique hotel and ‘cultural hub’ is now complete.
Award-winning designer, George Gorrow (previously Ksubi co-founder and creator of The Slow in Bali) and his wife Cisco Tschurtschenthaler are behind the project known as Sea Sea Hotel.
Families have been coming to the idyllic coastal town, about 20km southeast of Kempsey, for generations.
It boasts a world-renowned right-hand wave, breaking up to 400m in the right conditions, a caravan park in the heart of town and a new $2m mini golf club.
Now the new 25-room Sea Sea Hotel has opened at 30-34 Pacific St with the husband and wife team behind the project describing at as
not just a place to stay - but a cultural hub where guests can immerse themselves in the local surf culture, hospitality, art, and music.
They say the 25 rooms offer an acute sensitivity to textures and an irreverence for tradition with 70s surf inspired interiors throughout, with artisan-produced furniture and crafts juxtaposing audacious art and progressive thinking.
Rooms range from studios to a larger villa with a private pool and gardens, a separate lounge room and kitchen and three bathrooms.
Each room features world class mini bars, and 24-hour Sea Sea TV and radio channels curated by Wesley Herron of Reverberation Radio.
The communal surf club house features a surf and souvenir shop, a gallery with seasonal photography-focused exhibitions, a hi-fi audio lounge with music curated live from the resident record selector, two fireplaces, a bar and restaurant, and games room.
The Sea Sea Sane Kitchen is operated by Daniel Medcalf, co-owner and operator of No. 35 Kitchen and Bar, previously Icebergs Dining Room and Bar.
“It will will feature a distinctly Crescent inspired menu, with a Macleay Valley theme running throughout.
“It’s local produce brought together with plenty of care to showcase the best of what the overflowing Macleay Valley food bowl has to offer,” states Medcalf.
The hotel is also home to some of the Gorrows’ personal collection of works from Australia and international artists, both emerging and established.
The establishment of the hotel focused on renovating and revamping the existing building, keeping it a single level.
The style of the space is described as barefoot luxury, with the aim of a lower footprint.
A key aspect of the design is the gardens, with a large native landscape program. The outdoor area includes a large heated pool, an outdoor fireplace, sauna and ice baths.
“Crescent Head still feels like that place you visited as a child, it still feels so pure,” says Mr Gorrow.
“I love surfing, as does my wife, the waves here are fun waves to surf and the area offers quite a bit of diversity so it caters for everyone. If you don’t have a board you can try some of our rental fleet boards.”
The hotel launches to the public on November 15.
