A teacher-turned-nurse slammed for treating other people’s lives as having “no value” has stunned a magistrate with her hooning habit, racking up an obscene amount of speeding fines.

Carmel Mary Pike came before Forster Local Court on Wednesday where magistrate Allison Hawkins asked how many speeding fines she’d obtained.

“Too many,” Pike replied.

After taking time to flick through her record Ms Hawkins counted 36, telling Pike:

“You say ‘too many’ – I say that’s outrageous,” Ms Hawkins said.

The court heard the 71-year-old from Green Point, a small village near Forster, is a former teacher, now working as a nurse.

“You’ve worked in caring roles but you’ve treated other people’s lives on the roads as having no value to you.”

Pike was before the court to plead guilty to driving without a licence along The Lakes Way about 5.30pm on May 9.

She was detected by police driving north estimated to be over the 60 km/ph limit and when checked she was clocked at 78 km/ph.

Officers activated their lights and followed her. When pulled over they soon learned her licence had been suspended.

Officers asked if she had received notices from Transport for NSW and she replied: “I hadn’t really read them”.

During sentencing Ms Hawkins said if Pike had been before her for speeding she would have imposed the maximum penalty.

But she said the driving unlicensed offense reflected the “similar disregard” she has shown for the road rules with her incredibly high number of speeding fines.

In relation to the charge of driving without a licence she was given an 18-month community release order and no conviction was recorded.
