On Monday morning, Northern Sydney Local Health District confirmed the condition of a man who was critically injured in a Mid North Coast house fire over the weekend.

The 55-year-old remains in a “serious but stable condition”.

Investigations are continuing to determine if the man tried to re-enter his fully engulfed Port Macquarie home before being pulled out by firefighters.

He was flown in a critical condition to Royal North Shore Hospital following a fire in the granny flat of a property on the Oxley Highway just after midnight.

Emergency services were called to the home at around 12.35am where they found the detached building fully alight, with the main two storey house also on fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the man may have tried to re-enter the home as gas bottles exploded, causing burns to a large part of his body.

Paramedics stabilised the patient at the property before he was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and then flown to Royal North Shore which has a specialist burns unit.

Two people from the main house were also treated for injuries after they were rescued by police officers, including an 82-year-old man who was transported to hospital for assessment.

Mid North Coast Police District detectives have established a crime scene and are working alongside fire investigators to determine the cause of the blaze.
