Forensic experts are at a rest stop just metres off the nation’s number one thoroughfare after the discovery of a man’s body.
The crime scene was set up at the Talawahl rest stop at Possum Brush, about 15km south of Taree.
Emergency services were called to the rest stop just after 10am on Thursday following a concern for welfare.
Officers attached to Manning/Great Lakes Police District attended and located a man who was “non-responsive”.
Police performed CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics but he could not be revived.
The man is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 60s.
A crime scene has been established and will be forensically examined.
The popular rest stop is only accessible to southbound lanes of the Pacific Highway.
As inquiries continue, police urge anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
