A Mid-North Coast teen, who allegedly threatened a paramedic and had to be tasered and pepper sprayed before he could be arrested, has avoided cameras outside court.

A Mid-North Coast teen, who allegedly threatened an ambulance officer with a box cutter, had to be tasered and pepper sprayed before police could arrest him.

Leonard Ryan Bingham appeared in Taree Local Court on Wednesday, charged with being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and intimidating a frontline emergency worker with no actual bodily harm caused.

The 19-year-old pleaded not guilty to both charges, which stem from an incident at Moorland, about 20 minutes drive northeast of Taree.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to a home on Jericho Rd, Moorland to provide medical treatment to the teen about 1.10am on Thursday, June 1.

Police allege Bingham used a box cutter to threaten paramedics before they retreated and called for urgent police assistance.

Officers from Manning/Great Lakes Police District attended the property and found Bingham nearby.

He allegedly refused to follow police directions and the officers deployed tactical options, including using OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray and a taser, which initially had minimal effect.

The spray was again deployed, and the officers were able to arrest the man, according to a police statement issued at the time.

He was taken to Taree Police Station and charged.

Bingham was later granted bail to live with his mother at Moorland.

Bail has been continued and the case was adjourned to July 17.

Bingham’s lawyer indicated to the court she would attempt to have the matter dealt with under the Mental Health Act.
