Police are investigating an incident at the Mid-North Coast Correctional Centre on Wednesday, but have not confirmed whether any charges will be laid.
The Mid-North Coast News reported on Wednesday that a man, 20, had been been stabbed in a suspected altercation with two other men at the Kempsey facility.
Paramedics where called at about 2:20pm to reports that the inmate was suffering puncture wounds to his back and other facial lacerations.
He was transported to Port Macquarie Base Hospital in a stable condition, but has since returned to the centre.
It is believed the man was attacked by two other inmates of the facility, who have been identified by NSW Corrective Services.
There were no reports of staff being injured. A NSW Corrective Services spokeswoman released a statement on Wednesday afternoon confirming the attack.
“NSW Police have been notified and investigations are continuing,” the spokesperson said.
A Mid-North Coast District police spokesman could not confirm whether criminal charges would be laid.
It is the second major incident to occur at the facility this year, and follows an incident at the centre from July 2019.
In April, two men - aged 50 and 28 - were arrested following reports an inmate had suffered multiple stab wounds.
In July last year, a 31-year-old man suffered a collapsed lung as a result of an altercation with two other people.
Investigations into the latest incident continue.
