There’s a reason Australia has voted the Crescent Head Holiday Park the top caravan park in the nation and long time local Roger ‘Fergo’ Ferguson is not surprised one iota.
“The location — this place is the spearpoint of nature’s wonderland,” he said.
Fergo, a Crescent Head resident for 36 years, runs two annual longboard surf competitions, the Crescent Head Mal Classic and the Australian Old Mal Title, with participants filling up the park’s accommodation weeks prior.
“Crescent Head is the university longboard capital — everybody comes here to learn and everybody comes here to ride.
“Everybody comes here to connect,” he said.
The park took out the People’s Choice Award in Jayco’s Greatest Escapes 2024 competition that celebrates Australia’s best caravan parks.
Manager Demi Whittington agrees with Fergo that the park’s river and beach location, overlooking the legendary right hand surf break, makes it popular with visitors.
And she says the golf course adjacent to the park also adds to the appeal.
Together with her partner Paul Kennedy, the couple have been running the park since 2022 and feel thrilled to live on site and wake up there every day.
“During whale season, we have been blessed to even sight whales from our reception, which is where I spend most of my time,” she said.
She describes the park as a “place of rest and retreat”.
“It’s a place, to be barefoot, bask in the sun and make memories.”
Two other destinations on the east coast of NSW were among the competition winners — the Big 4 Gold Coast Holiday Park for the category of Best Family-Friendly Caravan Park, and NRMA Foster Tuncurry for Best Pet-Friendly Caravan Park.
